100 000 Tons of Grain Headed For Zim From Mexico

December 05, 2016

Reports have suggested that Zimbabwe will receive approximately 100 000 tons of maize from Mexico to aid in the country’s increasing food crisis.

Zimbabwe has been stuck in a terrible food crisis for most of the year.

This has mostly been due to poor weather conditions and lack of rain, caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon. El Nino has caused severe drought throughout the country and other parts of Southern Africa.

Tafadzwa Musarara, the chairperson for the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ), recently told reporters that the country has signed a deal with Mexico, to source their grain from there:

“…At the high-level meeting we progressively held with Mexico, we agreed that GMAZ will sign up to 100 000 metric tons of white maize to be supplied by Terra Wealth (Mexican milling company) to supplement our local grain reserves,” he said.

Some reports have also suggested that Zimbabwe has signed a similar deal with Tanzania, but that has yet to be confirmed.
