Three suicide bombers have attacked a small village in the north east of Nigeria, killing at least two people and injuring seven others.

The attack happened at around 20:00 in the small herding village of Shuwari Buri, where an elder in the community was an eyewitness to the attacks:

“Two of them rushed into a thatched hut and detonated their explosives, killing two brothers who had retired for the night,” Ali Musa, a local villager and part of the village’s civilian militia, said.

He continued, saying that the third attacker detonated the explosives in a crowd of people.

“The third bomber detonated her explosives among residents who had gathered … injuring seven,” he said.

All three of the attackers were female.

According to another member of the civilian militia, the three women had asked for a place to sleep earlier in the evening, saying they were travellers.

However, they were refused any accommodation on security grounds.

While unconfirmed, it is strongly believed that the suicide bombers were sent to the village by jihadist terrorist group, Boko Haram.

The Shuwari Buri village is about 38 kilometres from Maiduguri, the capital of the Borno State. The Borno State is often targeted by Boko Haram and there have been dozens of attacks in the area over the past year.

Nigeria’s Borno State is believed to be the birthplace of Boko Haram.
