8 Killed in Bomb Attacks in Maiduguri

March 22, 2017

Nigerian officials have confirmed that at least eight people have been killed in a bomb attack in the north east of the country.

The National Emergency Management Agency told reporters that several bombs were detonated along a highway in the north eastern city of Maiduguri on Wednesday morning.

These blasts happened in concession on the Maiduguri-Gamboru highway.

One of the bombs detonated at a camp for displaced people. Officials confirmed that at least two civilian people were killed at the camp.

The agency also confirmed that the bombs were attached to suicide bombers believed to be part of terrorist group, Boko Haram.

According to the agency, there were five suicide bombers and all five were killed in the process.

Furthermore, it is estimated that at least 20 other people were injured in the attacks.

Maiduguri is frequently attacked by Boko Haram terrorists. It is also often referred to as the ‘birthplace’ of Boko Haram, who started their insurgency in the country almost eight years ago.

This is the second case of suicide bombing attacks in the country within the past week. Last week, four teenage suicide bombers detonated their bombs on the outskirts of the city. All four girls were killed.

Authorities have said, however, that this morning’s attackers were all men.
