Buhari To Visit Restless South
Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, is set to visit the south of the country this week after what has been a tumultuous few weeks for Nigeria’s oil-producing region.
This will be his first visit to the region as president.
Recently, the area has been embroiled in violence and chaos as local militants attack oil refineries in the area.
The attacks on the oil refineries has caused Nigeria’s oil production to drop to its lowest level ever, with the country currently producing around 1.4 million oil barrels per day.
A spokesperson for the president said that he would be travelling to Ogoniland in Rivers state on Thursday.
However, Buhari isn’t visiting the region to stop or address the violence and chaos that is happening. The intended reason for his trip to Ogoniland is to assist n a cleanup of the area.
The region has long-since been subject to various oil spills.
“…All things being equal, the president will be in Ogoniland on Thursday for the historic clean up of the area,” the spokesperson said.
However, some people believe that the president might address the unrest that is happening in the area while he is there as well.
