Cameroon To Return 80 000 Refugees To Nigeria

June 14, 2016

The Nigerian government has confirmed that they have agreed to Cameroon’s voluntary return of close to 80 000 Nigerian refugees that had previously fled the country because of Boko Haram.

According to Nigerian officials, Cameroon – who had previously dumped thousands of people on the border – was threatening with repatriation.

In May, Nigerians who were returning home were blocked from returning to Cameroon.

However, the new influx of people will put quite the burden on Nigeria. As the country is already struggling to cater for the more than 2 million displaced Nigerians.

Nigerians have been fleeing to all corners of Africa because of the increased violence and turmoil in the country brought on by Boko Haram.

Sani Datt, a spokesperson for Nigeria’s emergency agency, said that an agreement for the safe return of the people were signed by both Cameroon and Nigeria as well as a UNHCr refugee agency.
