Car Bomb Kills Over 20 People in Mogadishu
A car bomb that went off in the middle of a busy market in the Somali capital of Mogadishu is believed to have killed more than 20 people, with authorities and medical personnel still counting the fatalities.
Police officials in the capital has said that they can only confirm eight deaths thus far, though they believe that there are way more fatalities.
Ibrahim Mohamed, a police official, has said that they are currently busy counting the fatalities:
“…We have counted about eight civilians so far who were killed in the blast and more than 10 others wounded but the death toll could be higher because the area is a market and it was so densely populated when the blast occurred, most people who were wounded have serious injuries,” he said.
However, a doctor that has been working with other medical professionals has said that they have counted as many as 28 dead bodies and over 30 people with serious injuries:
“…Our ambulances have collected 13 wounded civilians and 28 dead bodies, the toll could be higher because of the density of the location where the blast occurred,” Dr Abdukadir Abdirahman Adem said.
There has been several car bombings and other terrorist attacks in the area and the rest of Somalia over the past few months.
Thus far, no terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
A witness said that after the blast there was complete chaos in the streets of the country’s capital:
“…There was chaos and severed dead bodies strewn around the street, the market was so busy with people shopping when the blast ripped through the area. I saw many dead bodies but I could not count, I have helped collect more than 10 of them,” the witness, Abdulahi Osman said.
