Dlamini-Zuma Introduce ‘African Passport’ Concept at AU Summit
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the outgoing chairperson of the African Union Commission, has said introduced the concept of an ‘African passport’ during her last opening speech at the African Union summit in Rwanda.
For a while now various African leaders and members of the AU, has discussed the option of an ‘African passport’ that would allow the free movement of trade – as well as people – across the entire African continent.
However, while many are for the idea, there are also a bunch leaders that are against the idea of an African passport.
Dlamini-Zuma also had an actual, physical mock African passport in her hand, and handed it over to the new AU Chairperson, Idriss Déby.
Idriss Déby is the president of Chad.
The idea with the African passport, would be that government officials of various African countries receive them first. President of Rwanda – where the summit is being held – Paul Kagame, was the first to receive a passport.
Dlamini-Zuma said that the various members of the African Union should figure out the logistics of producing these passports when they return to their countries.
