Filipino Woman Killed in Rebel Ambush in Mozambique
A Filipino woman was killed in a rebel attack in Murrotone in Mozambique yesterday, when the rebels attacked a passenger bus.
The Filipino embassy in South Africa has confirmed the death of the woman, who was working as a teacher in Mozambique.
According to police, the passenger bus on which the woman was traveling, was ambushed by Renamo rebels.
Renamo is an insurgent group of rebels that have fought against the Mozambique government since 1992. They are also the main opposition to the ruling government.
As unrest starts to arise once more in the country’s central region, the rebels have launched more attacks. Renamo’s rebel chief, Afonso Dhlakama, has vowed to take control of some provinces and launch more attacks in order to force the government to give in to their demands.
According to the police, the woman was the only person who died, and four other passengers were injured during the attack:
“…The coach was ambushed by Renamo men, resulting in the death of a female foreigner who was Filipino, and four others were injured,” the police spokesperson said.
They continued saying that they could not reveal the name of the woman just yet:
“…Her name can’t be revealed at this stage because we are still busy with internal processes,” the police said.
Other reports have also said that the attack happened close to a base of the Renamo rebels and that there has been regular clashes with military forces there.
