Four Killed Amidst Political Unrest

March 22, 2016

Four people have been killed in the state of Rivers, after severe political unrest has caused riots and revolts.

The death of the four people also lead to the cancellation of election re-runs.

Besides the four people that were killed during the riots and revolts, police in the area have confirmed that at least 22 arrests were also made for people trying to disrupt the election process.

According to one police source, the rowdy crowd also tried to enter the offices of the National Electoral Commission. This forced them to barricade the offices.

“…[sic] Of more serious concern was the level of threats, violence and intimidation of election officials and voters by well-armed thugs and miscreants allegedly acting on behalf of some politicians, which marred the elections in some areas,” the Electoral Commission said.

They continued saying that there had been severe violence surrounding the election and that there had also been numerous threats made against them.

People also resorted to stealing of ballots in order to influence the re-runs:

“…[sic] There were reports of numerous attacks resulting in fatalities, kidnapping, ballot snatching, diversion of officials and materials, amongst others,” the Commission said.

Both the The Peoples Democratic Party and the opposing All Progressives Congress have blamed each other for the violence.
