July 08, 2016

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has embarked on a trip to Africa, where he will visit four African nations.

Modi will visit Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya.

He arrived in Mozambique on Thursday, after which he will travel to South Africa. India’s foreign ministry said that Modi’s visit to these African nations will focus on trade, investments and energy between India and the African nations.

He is specifically visiting these four nations because they lie on the Indian Ocean. India’s foreign ministry has described these countries as “economic gateways” to other, landlocked African nations.

Currently, Mozambique receives around 25% of india’s investment in Africa.

According to India’s foreign ministry, Modi will sign various trade and other agreements with the African nations, with a key focus on food and energy security.

There are also plans to have talks regarding aviation, with the hopes of establishing direct flights from Africa to India. Currently, no Indian airline has direct flights or connections with Africa.

In South Africa, Modi will meet with the Indian community in the country, which is estimated to be more than 1 million people.
