Militants Attack Oil Facility
A militant group has attacked an oil facility in Niger delta that is owned by Chevron. According to sources, the group blew up the main electricity feed pipeline.
The Niger Delta Avengers – as the militant group call themselves – claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter, describing in detail what they did to the oil facility.
This group of militants are one of the more ‘high-profile’ groups out of a string of groups that have emerged from the volatile Niger delta.
These groups focus on attack oil facilities such as Shell, Chevron and ENI.
The attacks cause these companies to put out less oil, which then in turn, pushes up the global crude oil prices. Something the militant groups want.
Dirk Steffen, a risk analyst from a Danish risk intelligence firm, said that the biggest risk with these attacks is the financial strain these attacks puts on the government:
“…The main threat posed by this development is the severely reduced oil output, which puts further pressure on the financially constrained government,” he said.
Chevron has not yet officially responded to the attack and has not yet released a statement.
