Niger Delta Avengers take Responsibility for Pipeline Attack
The Nigerian militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, have claimed the Chevron Escravos export pipeline attack in the early hours of this morning. They have labelled this attack a warning to international oil groups not to repair damaged infrastructure until negotiations have taken place.
In just a few days militants will meet with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to discuss the end of the sabotage destroying oil production and, in turn, the economy.
US oil firm Chevron, the operator of the pipeline, was not available for comment.
According to a security officer an oil spill occurred after the incident:
“For now, we can’t confirm if it was as a result of militant attack or rupture on the pipeline, but all I can say is that there is a spill in the area from a damaged pipeline belonging to Chevron Nigeria Limited.”
Nigeria depends on oil sales for 70 per cent of its government revenue so attacks of these kind are devastating to the economy
President Buhari’s government will take part in peace talks with the militants and key Niger Delta leaders in Abuja on 31 October in an attempt to resolve the situation.
