Nigeria Asks UN to Help With Boko Haram Negotiations
Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, has personally called on the United Nations to help him and his government with negotiations relating to the release of the so-called Chibok girls.
According to a government statement that was released on Thursday, Buhari wants the UN to help with negotiations with Boko Haram to free the 200 school girls that were kidnapped from Chibok more than two years ago.
The Nigerian government has been constantly criticised for their failure to free the kidnapped girls.
While some have managed to escape their captors, over 100 school girls are still being held by the terrorist group.
According to reports, Buhari has also been in personal communications with UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, about working with the United Nations to free the girls.
Buhari is believed to have said that his government is [sic] “willing to bend over backwards” to help free the girls, but that they are struggling to find a credible Boko Haram leader to start negotiations with.
The Nigerian government has said that they have been close to freeing the girls on three separate occasions before negotiations collapsed.
It is not yet clear whether the UN will assist in negotiations with Boko Haram.
