Nigeria Calls Out David Cameron Over Corruption Remarks
Nigerian officials have called out British Prime Minister, David Cameron, over remarks he recently made, calling the country ‘fantastically corrupt’.
Video footage was recently released to the world media where David Cameron makes some rather harsh remarks about Nigeria, as well as Afghanistan.
In the footage, Cameron can be seen and heard speaking to Queen Elizabeth II at some event, when he appears to tell her that Nigeria and Afghanistan is two of the ‘most corrupt countries’ in the world.
“…[sic] Nigeria and Afghanistan, possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world,” he can be heard saying.
The comments come at a crucial time, as President Buhari of Nigeria – as well as President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan – are due to attend a meeting in Britain as part of an anti-corruption summit.
Nigeria has responded to the leaked comments and have branded them as cringeworthy and not a true reflection of modern Nigeria.
A spokesperson for president Buhari, Garba Shehu, called Cameron out on Twitter yesterday:
“…The prime minister must be looking at an old snapshot of Nigeria. Things are changing with corruption and everything else,” the tweet read.
Cameron has not responded to the leaked comments, but a spokesperson for Downing Street – the office of the British Prime Minister – had the following to say:
“…Both leaders have been invited to the summit because they are driving the fight against corruption in their countries. The UK stands shoulder to shoulder with them as they do so.”
