Nigeria Militant Group Calls For End To OIl Attacks
A Nigerian militant group that was prominent in the early 2000’s, has reportedly urged other, more relevant militant groups to engage in talks with the NIgerian government to ultimately bring an end to the ongoing oil attacks.
For the past few months, Nigeria’s oil-producing South has been bombarded with violence as local militants attack the various oil refineries.
There have also been significant clashes between the militants and the Nigerian military that has been deployed to the south of the country.
There has also been several casualties.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), who were active in the 2000’s with the same modus operandi as the current Niger Delta Avengers – the most prominent local militant group nowadays – has appealed to them to engage in peace talks with the government.
They also said that they had failed in their attempts in the 2000’s to cripple the country’s oil industry, and that they later welcomed the peace between the government and their organisation.
The Avengers had rejected the government’s invite for talks last week.
The government wanted to find a way to make peace with the militants as well as declare a truce with them, urging them to put down their weapons and bring peace to the area.
The MEND said their message to the Avengers was straightforward:
“…Our message to the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) is simple: The Niger Delta struggle is beyond attacks on oil installations,” they said.
In the meantime, president Buhari has ordered more security to the area
