Nigerian Militants Blow-Up Yet Another Gas Pipeline
Nigerian rebel militants have blown-up yet another gas pipeline in the Akwa Ibom state in southern Nigeria.
The pipeline that was blown up belonged to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) – a state-run oil company.
The most prolific militant rebel group in the region, the Niger Delta Avengers, has claimed responsibility for the attack on the gas pipeline.
In a statement released by the rebel group, they confirmed that they blew up the pipeline on Sunday evening:
“…At 23:30 on Sunday, the NDA blew up Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) gas pipeline at Nsit-Ibom,” they said.
The Niger Delta Avengers have been responsible for many attacks on many pipelines in the area belonging to various local and international companies, including big international players such as Shell, Exxon and Chevron.
The continued attacks on oil plants and pipelines in the area has drastically reduced to the production of oil and petroleum in the area. It is even more devastating for the nIgerian economy as a whole, as the country is already climbing an uphill battle with the low global crude oil prices.
The attacks and lack of oil production have also had an effect on inflation in the country, with inflation being the highest it has been in eleven years.
The Nigerian government has tried to hold talks with the militant rebels, but they have repeatedly rejected such talks.
