Strike Over Fuel Price Increase Imminent

May 18, 2016

Several Nigerian labour unions have warned that there could be a national protest happening very soon because of the rise in petrol price.

The country’s fuel prices have gone up immensely since the government scrapped the nation’s fuel subsidy.

With support of the National Labour Congress (NLC), workers all over Nigeria has said that they plan to go through with the industrial action, even though an injunction had been filed with Nigeria’s industrial court.

The federal government tried to put a stop to the imminent strike by taking the NLC to the National Industrial Court (NIC).

Nigerians, however, still vowed to take to the streets in protest on Wednesday (today) and Thursday.

The unrest and upset comes after the government announced last week that they would be scrapping the country’s fuel subsidy, which then meant that the petrol price jumped immensely from N86.50 to N145 per litre.

However, the government plans on fighting the strikes with a “no work, no pay” mantra:

“…[sic] Where any worker takes part in a strike, he shall not be entitled to any wages or remuneration for the period of the strike and any such period shall not count for the purpose of reckoning the period of continuous employment and all rights dependent on continuity of employment shall be prejudicially affected accordingly,” a statement by the Government Secretary read.
