Lionel Messi Sets New Records
Lionel Messi sent records tumbling as the star helped Barcelona knock Chelsea out of the Champions League 3-0 at Camp Nou last night.
The Argentinian scored the fastest goal of his career, finding the net at just two minutes and eight seconds from a narrow angle.
Later, in the 63rd minute, the 30-year-old scored his 100th Champions League goal, becoming only the second player in history to do so.
He joins his great rival at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo, in the 100 club, however, Messi now holds the record for reaching his century in the fewest number of games.
Ronaldo reached 100 in 137 games, while Messi only needed 123 matches – 14 fewer than the Real Madrid star.
It was Messi’s 601st career goal, and the game was Barca’s first win over Chelsea since 2006.
Despite Messi helping to knock his team out of the Champions League, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte spoke highly of the player after the match.
He said: “This type of player is born once every 50 years. We are talking about one single player with this capacity, with this ability, with these skills. He’s fantastic.”
