Nigeria Fined For Overcrowding
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Nigeria for a lack of security as well as overcrowding at their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Egypt on March 29th.
The football governing body imposed a fine of €4,400 on Nigeria for the neglect in security and overcrowding of the stadium.
The game was played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
The Ahmadu Bello Stadium has a capacity for 15 000 spectators. However, it is believed that more than an astonishing 40 000 spectators pummelled into the stadium to watch the match between Nigeria and Egypt.
According to eye witnesses, spectators pushed their way onto the stadium any which way they could.
Witnesses said that some people even scoured the floodlight scaffolding on the pitch, while others had to be kept from moving onto the actual pitch by police officials on horseback.
The overcrowding of the stadium and the security risk it imposed, is almost solely to blame on the Kaduna government.
The government had decided earlier that they would open the doors so to spek to the stadium so that spectators could watch the game free of charge.
