Super Eagles Fail To Qualify For AFCON 2017
It was a sad evening all over Nigeria last night as the national football team, the Super Eagles, failed to qualify for the 2017 African Cup Of Nations tournament.
The Super Eagles had to face a defeat by the Egyptian national team – The Pharaohs of Egypt – last night when they lost their match in Alexandria 0 – 1.
Previously, the Eagles and the Pharaohs drew 1 – 1 in Kaduna last Friday.
While Nigeria had glory back in 2013 when they won the tournament, but it seems that things have slowly been going downhill for the Eagles after that as they have failed to qualify for the tournament for the second time in a row now.
The Eagles captain of the 1980 Nations Cup winning team, Christian Chukwu, had some choice words for the team and their managers, saying that while the team did play well, the failed to score goals early on, which would have helped them in their attempt to qualify:
“…[sic] The team lacked the zeal to score goals in the early hours in the match…We played good enough, but we did not strike our opponents’ net early not until we were one goal down…The boys should have strategised on how to score early in the second half, but instead they held on to the ball…I still give kudos to the coach for a good job,” he said.
The Egyptian team will now qualify for the tournament out of Group G after Chad had pulled out on Monday due to financial constraints.
